About Bottom of the Bottle / Taking Back Tuesday
A brief history....
Bottom of the Bottle is a Rock night. It is run and promoted by Dj Trev. Into 2006 it has started calling itself "Taking Back Tuesday", so that everyone who owns a Bottom of the Bottle T-shirt can say it's 'old school'. The theory being that a bit of a name change worked for P-Diddy, who is still cheerfully releasing records by dead people and now no one knows what you mean when you say Sean Coombs. Or indeed Puff Daddy. On the down side, the artist formerly known as Prince is now called Prince again, but then, in 5 years time the name Bottom of the Bottle might not sound so quite so Nu-Grunge and naff so it might be back also...
Taking Back Tuesday is Held at Cardinal Sins, entry is £2.50 and al drinks are £2. The nights, this website, Bottom of the Bottle the corporate clothing brand, and everything, is run by Dj Trev. He's not very good with computers, which explains the website I guess.
Over the 3 plus years (coming up to 4 this summer) it's been running Bottom of the Bottle has had many changes, in busy times it's been once a week, and there have even been specialist music nights, including a Death Metal night, a Punk Night, and 80's hair metal night and more. The new look, Taking Back Tuesday, is once a month and features 3 hand picked bands, from the genre's of Metal, Punk, Rock, Emo, Experimental, or anything that is plain exciting. Doors open at 10pm and after the Bands, Dj Trev (The guy who's writing this and feels like a knob referring to himself third person) plays records until around 3am, or when everyone has passed out, fallen over, been hospitalised, been arrested, gone to Shanaz for a Curry, pulled a totally awesome hot goth girl (this counts for both girls and boys, there are no hot goth boys, sorry) or gone home bored, whichever comes first.
In the past numbers through the doors have varied from 100 people on a quit night to 250-300 on a busier one. The most we've ever had through the doors was for our 3rd birthday in 2005 which had just over 400 in.
We used to run a night in Driffield, but tossed it off, as it was crap.
History:
Originally the night was started at Jimmy's Nightclub in Harrogate as a way of bringing in trade on Mondays. The top floor wasn't open so Chris Dunn the manager decided to try running an alternative night upstairs. To do this he enlisted the services of Dj Trev. Flyers were designed and the first night was planned. It was thought that for the event to be worthwhile we needed over 80 people through the doors, for it to be deemed a success over 100. In the event we had over and extra 180 people come for our first one. It was classed a winner, and Bottom of the Bottle was born.
Since that night - 8th of July 2002 things have changed quite a lot. Unfortunately Chris Dunn, the "inventor" of Bottom of the Bottle, has left the nightclub industry to run his own internet service (nothing to do with this site, it's all very professional). The manager to take over Jimmy's decided that it "wasn't his thing". This was no problem, as the first nightclub we approached snapped up the night. It has turned out that the move to Carringtons was a good one, as the venue is very supportive, and the night seems to work better there. As it goes Jimmy's shut down soon after we moved on, so things have turned out for the best.
For nigh on 3 years it was held at Carringtons, where Bottom of the Bottle went from strength to strength. We decided to try and run the night every fortnight, and frankly we were not sure if the numbers would stay at the level they were (before leaving Jimmy's we were bringing in about an average of 160 people). This proved to be a great move for a year and a half, but ultimately returned to it's classic monthly format.
We operate a very strict policy of NO DRESS CODE.
Harrogate is not a Huge town, but it has lots of dedicated partiers and a good amount of Moshers, Metalheads, Punks, Grungers, Goths, Scenesters, Indie kids and Rockers, and it is them that make Bottom of the Bottle so good.
We should also point you to The NYHC who run excellent Punk gigs in Town, and the HGHC who do ace Underground gigs too! For the size it is, Harrogate has got loads going on, and we are proud to be part of it.
